Posted By Graham Findlay Over the course of a year, the total number of accidents reported in our organisation, including those where no injury is involved, equates to between 10 and 12 percent of the workforce (which is currently just over 4000). Can anyone tell me if this is or is not an abnormal rate? Nationally reported stats only cover RIDDOR, but I would like to compare our 'general' rates with someone else. Our business is 'integrated facilities management', or cleaning, catering, grounds etc. Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

Posted By Debbie Walker Graham, We, like you, use a measure of total accident rate that we can't compare with those nationally published by the HSE. We're a food manufacturing site with only approx 450 staff but work 24 - 7 at 3 sites. I've sent you separately the rates that we have "achieved" for ALL accidents per 100 000 hours worked over the past 4 years. At the moment for every 100 000 hours we have 16 accidents reported to us in the department. We are also comapring these numbers across different shifts at each site (as some work 12 hours and some work 8). I would be interested to know how are other people managing to compare their performance with other companies in their own industry and is there an easy source of these statistics other than the RIDDOR only from HSE? Posted By Paul Adams We also have a requirement to benchmark and finding suitable information is not easy. I am happy to share our accident stats for the last five years with anyone who is prepared to reciprocate. I can provide this info in terms of reportable stats and overall stats. We are a company of aprox 150 employees in the UK involved in tool manufacture and provision as a subcontractor to mainly the petrochem and offshore sector.
