Posted By Hazel Harvey Tony, I am not aware that there is a VQ at level 2 for health and safety. There are the ENTO generic units but these are unlevelled. When they are taken as a block (7 units) they now form the level 3 Health and Safety award. If you have any more info about could you send it on please.

Posted By Tony Birchall The sceme number is 3681 with City and Guilds. Being a VQ it is both assessment and examination based. This Progression Award has 9 Units of Practical Assignments followed by a 1 hour multiple choice examination. It involves the candidate slightly differently than the NVQ route would.

Posted By Jim Walker Tony, I don't mean to hijack your thread. Hazel, Are there any moves to align "Managing Safely" into the VQ system?

Posted By Hazel Harvey Jim, The IOSH Managing Safely is a taught awareness course based on the ENTO standards Health and Safety for People at work. There are no plans to change this to a workplace based assessment similar to an NVQ. IOSH members who deliver the course use their knowledge and experience in health and safety to deliver the required amount of knowledge to their delegates to increase their awareness of health and safety issues. Having completed the course a person could easily undertake an NVQ type qualification using their acquired knowledge to underpin their competence to undertake the tasks required. There are in fact no level 2 standards produced by ENTO, who develop the standards for NVQ qualifications, the qual. mentioned by Tony is in fact a City and Guilds product which uses the generic standards produced by ENTO and assesses them at level 2. These standards can in fact be assessed at different levels as they were designed to be units that could be used across the breadth of the NVQ system in all disciplines. Hope this answers your query

Posted By David Sinclair Just as a sideline, I think health and safety qualifications (particularly those which are competence based) are likely to become increasingly important in the future. We are now seeing individuals rather than companies prosecuted for health and safety offences on a regular basis. One of the defences for a company following say, an accident, is to be able to show that the person(s) it employed/engaged to undertake a task/role was competent and/or adequately qualified. Regards. Posted By Tony Birchall The intensity of the VQ Level 2 is similiar to that of the Nebosh Certificate. The underpinning knowledge sessions can last around 4 hours each time. The candidates are able to tackle the assignments, sort of like a homework, and be able to return to the Centre to address any problem areas concerning the assignments. It's important to note that the examination, although multiple choice, asks questions similar to those in any Nebosh Certificate.

Posted By Hazel Harvey The level 2 progression award leads to quite an interesting point. The award was designed for those who could not complete an NVQ but were on their way to it. It was also designed to contribute the knowledge towards the generic Health and Safety for People at Work units and a bit of the old NVQ level 3 in OSH practice. As we are aware the generic units now form the NVQ level 3 in Health and Safety (note not Practice) and the revised NEBOSH Certificate has been designed to meet the underpinning knowledge for these units! This tends to imply that the City and Guilds Progress award (which on paper is quite good) scheduled at level 2 is in fact level 3 like the NEBOSH Certificate. I think what this proves is that when you are looking at basic awareness programmes like these that the level is somewhat less important than the content. There are lots of programmes of this type around so anyone choosing a course should make sure that they are getting a programme which meets their organisational requirements.

Posted By Martyn Hilditch I would be interested in finding out what the success rates are for this Award in comparison to the Nebosh Certificate.

Posted By Hazel Harvey Martin, The assessments of the two qualifications are not really comparable. This C&G award is assessed via assignments at the end of each module (9 in total) and a multi-choice test at the end of the course. So the pass rate is very different. Externally set examinations like NEBOSH are always difficult as a degree of question spotting has to go on. The current pass rates for the Certificate, which I think are about 60% are actually pretty good for this style of examination.
