Posted By Paul Lister Does anyone, ideally but not necessarily working in the hospital environment, have a view on the prohibition of the use of mobile phones in hospitals. At present we prohibit their use throughout our general hospital but the arguments to support this ban seem frail.

Posted By David Mains Paul, I agree.
Modern telecommunications equipment poses a very minor (insignificant) risk to modern hospital equipment. Having said that the warning signs are still displayed throughout the trust that I work for. Indeed I cannot recall going into any healthcare premises and not seeing a sign telling me to switch off my mobile, including in my chiropodist's!
At the moment no-one is being bold enough to take the decision to allow phones although this may also have something to do with the nuisance that they cause aas well as any H&S issue.

See article on "Expecting the unexpected" in this month's "health and safety at work" which touchs on how in Sweden they have looked at the disadvantages of hospital wide bans.

Posted By Nick House To back up the statement that mobile p[hones are generally OK in (most) areas of hospitals, when my father was ill in hospital last year, the consulatant dealing with him regularly made and receivfed calls on his mobile whilst doing his rounds on the hospital wards. Apparently, the only time he turned his phone off during these occasions, was when visiting the High Dependency Unit (HDU).
Food for thought........
