Can anyoune help me?

I am looking for information and examples where death or serious injury has occured as a result of person falling whilst wearing arrest equipment. In this instance the equipment did its job and the individual was left suspended but due to rescue delays died.

I can remember a case recently which triggered of a review but can't remember detail, any help appreciated.

There is a wealth of information in the HSE contract research report 451/2002, Harness suspension: review and evaluation of existing information, priced £20 from HSE Books. The key issue would appear to be whether or not the casualty is conscious or not.

Also you may wish to look at Specialist Inspector Report no 59 downloadable from HSE website.

I understand that this was prompted at least in part by a fatal accident in Eire in December 1999.

Since I am imagine that court action is still working its way through, I am not going to comment on this incident further !!

There was a fatal accident to a scaffolder earlier this year at a Plant in Germany.

Two scaffolders were working on the scaffold when it tipped over, both were wearing harnesses. The one who died had his clipped on, the other was not attached and he jumped clear and was badly injured.

I wouldn’t wish for this example to be used as an argument for not using harnesses and lanyards.

This man did not die because of his harness he died because the scaffold had not been properly secured and it tipped over.

As for the man in your example would you say he would have had a better chance without the harness?

All that aside you do raise a very important point. We should not simply issue harnesses as a risk control measure unless we have thought through how we are going to retrieve a fallen man as quickly as possible.

Regards
Steve

The information I am trying to locate relates to an incident where after a fall a man was left suspended by his fall arrest gear and as a result suffered severe trauma and died. It was the lack of rescue plan to retrieve him that ultimately caused his death, he did not actaully hit the deck and suffer injury. Has anyone any ideas where I can find more info?
