The HSE recommends asbestos should be left in place and "managed" where possible. The HSE rightly claims the process of removal of asbestos can create additional hazards plus the removed material must be disposed of which can create an environmental hazard.

The Association of Insurance and Risk Managers (AIRMIC) claim in a press release dated 5 October 2003 "Any organisation discovering asbestos runs the risk of being unable to obtain EL cover as insurers are generally unwilling to accept exposure to asbestos related claims. Ref. http://airmic.com/PressRelease/elrelease31003.doc

Should organisations therefore:-
1. Forget about asbestos surveys, asbestos management and just get the asbestos removal companies in?
or
2. Do not carry out an asbestos survey in case asbestos is found which could then make it impossible to obtain insurance?

All this means is that the insurance company will not cover any asbestos related claims.

My advice is that you follow the regs, acop, and guidance on asbestos and manage the risk.

You could take out insurance to protect you against any asbestos related claims I guess.
