I'm trying to get my company H&S Key Performance Indicators away from measuring "negatives" and towards some "positives.

I've done a forum search and have found some good stuff on a thread started 23/11/00.

I was wondering if anyone could add to that with any advances, they know about.

Jim,

Just a couple of suggestions - positives would include things like the number of audits / inspections actually completed on time and against schedule, percentage of required forms completed appropriately and accurately, percentage of critical procedures effectively reviewed over a given period, number of "perfect" inspections etc. etc..

This takes the focus of where we went wrong or failed (accident stats) and where we are promoting good behaviours and positive enforcement. But keep an eye on the negatives as well - these can be used to demonstrate how positives are being effective in reducing the negatives.

There was a good article on this in the recent SHP, entitled "Get the Facts before you Act" - following up some of the references might help you with further suggestions.

Also, Step Change (http://step.steel-sci.org/publications/main_publications_fs.htm) have a publication "Leading Performance --- - A guide for Effective Use", available in pdf. under the main Publications Index. This has some guidance on the subject in general.
