When working on small construction jobs of durations of 2 to 3 weeks with less than 5 men on site do I need to ensure that there is an accident book on site. Our procedures to date are an in-house pro-forma accident/incident and near miss forms which are filled in and faxed or returned to the office. Accident details are then filled into the book. I am considering issuing each supervisor with their own book which they can take from job to job. Returning it when the book is full although reportable accidents would be dealt with through the main office as they happen.

Is this good practice.

Peter.

You may or may not be aware that the old BI 510 accident book has been revised by the HSE following data protection issues.

What the law requires you to do is to keep a record of accidents to people at work if you own or occupy
a factory, mine or quarry.
works or premises where the Factories Act 1961 applies.
any other premises in which (or around which) you employ ten or more people at the same time.

The revised BI 510 is an easy way to comply with this although there seems to be sections missing that your insurers might want.

If your in-house forms meet or exceed the BI 510 book then this should satisfy the requirement. The only thing I would warn against is the data protection side of things.
Accident books/forms have to be readily available for all staff therefore it is imperative that all completed forms are returned to a central source within the company. The company also has to be registered with the Data Protection Commisioner.

If you opt for the BI 510 revised they can be purchased through HSE Books for £4.75.

Please note if anyone is using the old version books then they must be withdrawn by the end of the year. If you are withdrawing them ensure that holders are given the precise reason for change and a suitable replacement.
