I work within an FE College, and the carpentry department have been asked to construct a wheelchair access ramp.
In terms of construction, does it come down to risk assessment and the ramp being suitably designed for the task, or is the access ramp considered to be a piece of work equipment. If it is presumably it will have to comply with PUWER, and a European Standard
Any suggestions

Hi Warren,
I think the standard you need to look at is BS 8300:2001 - Design of buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people — Code of practice.
For disabled access ramps it gives details on material of construction, gradient, handrails, landings, surface materials, lighting etc etc in section 5.
Regards,
Steve

You should consult the Building Regs Approved Document M 1999 Ed - Access and facilties for disabled people. Gradients, landings, width, turning space, kerb size, handrail etc. etc. The surface will clearly need to reduce the risk of slipping in all weathers, wood will need some other surface treatment.Tactile surfaces should also be considered as will lighting, door furniture and so on.
