At a off-site organised company xmas dinner and dance an employee receives a nasty 'wound' from a fellow employee - can the company be held liable? (how, where, why)

Any employer organised event is treated as an extension of the workplace. This is also true for harrassment, violence and inappropriate behaviour.

If the injury had arisen due to something the company could have reasonably foreseen and controlled you could be held liable. (A faulty speaker giving an employee an electric shock for instance).
However if as I think you are getting at one employee assaulted another, the company would be unlikely to be found vicariously liable for the actions of that employee.

If the person was working 'inside the scope of his employement' then yes, employer could be held liable, was this person employed to assault other employees!
