I need your help!
Does any body out there know of a good video on the reversing of HGV’s?
We are trying to develop our own Banks-man training course for our multi site company (builders merchant). We do try to operate a one-way system or at least turn vehicles in the yard areas but as we all know this is not always possible and as a result some do need to be backed into or out of the site. This often will involve busy main roads, so as you can see we need it to be right.
Any information will be much appreciated.

Not an expert on this Graeme, but I would have thought that a highly visible observer who has been trained to signal effectively with the drivers could guide the vehicle out - or alternatively, would it be better if the vehicle was backed in, so all it had to do was pull back out again?
Points to be careful of -
1. Drivers need to acknowledge that the observer is in charge
2. Observer must be visible to driver at all times - if they can't see them, vehicle remains stationary until they can
3. Observer has to be careful not to step out into busy traffic
Remember that you are not legally entitled to attempt control of traffic by stopping it - only a police officer or traffic warden has that power. But you may be able to consult the local authority regarding temporary traffic management arrangements (bollards) to prevent parking at specific points so your access and swing are not blocked or constricted.
Following the principle of hierarchical risk reduction, is there any way that the site can be reconfigured or for access to be moved / changed, taking it away from busy traffic flows?
