Posted By Peter Rees We are considering using the climate survey tool to carry out a benchmarking exercise on the current safety culture within our organisation. Has anyone any experience using the HSE tool (whether good or bad) that they are willing to share, or are there any other similar packages available that have been used? Thanks in advance.

Posted By Ken Lucas Peter I can send you a copy of one that I adapted. The HSE Climate Survey Tool we found to be very long with a number of questions very similar. If you can post your email address I will send you a copy. I have tried to send it to you direct but it bounces back 'undeliverable, email address not known.' Regards Ken

Posted By Ross Stirton I have recently been involved with Aberdeen University to delevop a tool that looks not just at the culture/climate, but which also attempts to link with the organisations actual performance (as evidenced by leading/lagging indicators), to make some cause/effect judgements. It has provided us with some very interesting intelligence (a significant amount of which was counterintuitive). The tool is being further developed to identify 'predictors' of both good and poor HSE performance. We applied the technique to 12,000 personnel in 8 countries, in different industry sectors (primarily design/construction), translated it into 4 different languages, and found it to be equally effective in each location/sector. It is not free (and doesn't come cheap!) but, if you have the budget, I can highly recommend it... For more info, refer to D. Steven Yule; http://www.abdn.ac.uk/~psy296/dept or feel free to contact me direct at ross.stirton@halliburton.com Regards, Ross Stirton

Posted By Raymond Rapp Peter, The HSE have done some research in the use of their CST which you may find interesting. Try their search engine as I do not have the web address to hand. Whilst researching for my dissertation I found some useful info on the HSEs CST as follows: It is a very long survey at 71 questions if I remember. It focuses on prescriptive (rules & regs) issues as opposed to cultural factors. It provides for a benchmarking facility, but its usefulness is problematic. Very costly if you buy the full package. You may prefer as I did to design your own bespoke survey and it is much more interesting to tailor specific questions to your workplace. Regards Ray Ray
