Posted By Ken Blair I am planning a session of manual handling training for some new members of staff. Also I have a member who has received this training before but refused to carry out any of the manual lifting for to be assessed. If this person was to refuse again, what would be the next course of action that should be taken ? The person in question is overweight but can carry out all their duties of work fine without any physical problems. Any advice on my next step would be much appreciated. Ken Blair.

Posted By JamesK If an employee refuses to carry out the assessment the best course of action would be to detail this on paper. I have a checklist on the assessment and a section of this deals with the trainee carrying out the 5 basic lifts and these are ticked off at the completion of each lift. I have a section also for non-completion of the lifts for whatever reason...it could be an injury that stops the person from lifting or it may be that they are just not able. The trainee would then sign that he/she completed the tasks or not and a reason would then be written on the sheet( and signed) This signed sheet would then be given to the nurse/doctor/safety department and a date set for re-assessment. It would be the company doctor to make a final call on the persons ability to lift or not. Jim
