Posted By Trudy Clements Any information that other colleagues may have on the fire safety standards or BS for office furniture (upholstery) would be most grateful. Many chairs etc. do not have a label or sticker on them to indicate their compliance with safety standards. What are others doing to ensure their furniture is meeting safety standards?? Any advice appreciated Thanks

Posted By Peter J Harvey Trudy, I assume that your concerns are based on the requirements of general fire safety and the standards in the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988? The DTI have published information on this legislation and you can find the details with a quick google search. In general industry in the UK responded exceptionally well to this legislation and stopped making "non compliant" furniture or furnishings almost straight away. If you are looking at labels you should be interested in furniture that is BS 5852,BS 7177 or BS 6807 compliant or newer than 1991. I would be surprised if I find modern office furniture more than 15 years old.
