Posted By John Phynn Hello there I am trying to locate a sign that can be used to show accident information in the workplace (How many days since last accident etc) I can probably have a bespoke one made but I just thought I'd ask if anyone knew of a supplier who specialised in this sort of thing. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Posted By Lee Thompson John, Im not aware of a particular supplier who provide this sign, though as you say someone like Safetyshop etc will probably be able to make you a custom sign to do the job. Problem with displaying a sign of this type is that you could find it discourages the reporting of accidents. Staff could be less inclined to report their "minor" accident in the knowledge that it will knock the sites umpteen days of no accidents back to zero, with, I suspect managers not being to impressed!! Something to consider? Regards, Lee

Posted By Raymond Rapp Why bother with a sign. I assume we are talking about behavouril safety, it is in my opinion a wasteful exercise and as the previous respondent indicated, such 'artificial' actions only alienate those within the workforce. Ray

Posted By Robert Paterson Hi John I made up our own board using laminated letters and numbers and use it to indicate date of last reportable accident onsite. This has raised the awareness of working safely rather than having the opposite effect as indicated by the prevoius postings. "Minor" accidents are still reported and investigated. By doing this we are keeping our reportable accidents down. One company I was with had an electronic revolving sign that was updated every day. Personally I think they are a good idea and help keep awareness high. 155 days to date since last reportable. Regards Robert Paterson

Posted By shaun allport Talking of accidents......... i have always measured the incident rate as follows: Avg number of emploees X days available to work X hours per day. thus giving..... a recordable injury X a "factor" divided by total hours of exposure this will give a rate.. My question is... what is this rate known as , it is not a %?? anyone help??

Posted By Nick Egan Shaun Perhaps you should call your rate the "Allport". The rate you chose presumably suits you better than the HSE Rate per 100,000 employees, because it fitted better with your local scale of things. The down side is that it would make comparisons with other rates more difficult. I use a rate per hundred employees (avg) per annum as it gives a more locally meaningful scale while being easily convertible to HSE/labour force survey data. Anyway we stray from the original question. Nick

Posted By shaun allport Hi Nick, strayed indeed... i appreciate HSG65 states 100.000 for incidents, however it also states 1.000.000 for frequency reporting i'm just somewhere in between.... regards

Posted By Pat Burns MIOSH - SpDipEM - AMIQA It never ceases to amaze me to see how people react when someone who is looking for specific information to promote safety and health in their workplace. John asked where he could get a sign, he is then bombarded with the why he shouldn'ts and why he shoulds. Perhaps if people responded to tell him the answer to his question rather than just their own opinion of whether he should have one or not without answering the question in the first place then he might consider those comments. John might already know the pros and cons and having assessed them judged that this would be right for the work environment involved. John you could contact Allsigns on 01302 752070, I am sure they will be only to willing to help you.
