Is there a legal requirement to retain COSHH assessments for a specified period of time? If there is no legal requirement, what would be a realistic period for retention?
thanks

Except a record must be kept of monitoring...
THE EMPLOYER SHALL ENSURE THAT A SUITABLE RECORD OF MONITORING CARRIED OUT FOR THE PURPOSE OF THIS REGULATION IS MADE AND MAINTAINED AND THAT THAT RECORD OR A SUITABLE SUMMARY THEREOF IS KEPT AVAILABLE -
(A) WHERE THE RECORD IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THE PERSONAL EXPOSURES OF IDENTIFIABLE EMPLOYEES, FOR AT LEAST 40 YEARS; OR
(B) IN ANY OTHER CASE, FOR AT LEAST 5 YEARS,
FROM THE DATE OF THE LAST ENTRY MADE IN IT.
... and since in many cases the coshh assessment will be based on or include monitoring results it seems prudent to keep the coshh assessment for a similar duration.

Given that they may be useful as evidence in the event of a related health condition, it would seem prudent to retain them for a period relevant to the likely time until which evidence of such a condition could be expected to appear - and, in any event, not less than 3 years (or 5 years when associated with health monitoring).
