Posted By David Broomfield We are a boarding school which lets out 1 of our buildings to an activities provider, they wish to install a 3.5m high by 12m long climbing wall on our site. Being new to the H+S business (4 weeks into NEBOSH) would welcome any comments on suitable safeguards for the facility. They are proposing a roped area and a 'NO UNSUPERVISED CLIMBING' as being adequate!!!!

Posted By John D Crosby David HSE Books have a very good video called 'Get a Grip' which is all about the management of indoor climbing walls. This gives good practice for the different activities that can take place on the wall. John C

Posted By David Broomfield Sorry I wasn't specific enough, the climbing wall is to be a purpose built exterior wall positioned within sight of a public right of way with no current or proposed barriers between the footpath and the climbing wall.

Posted By Dave Garioch Hello David, places where you may be able to get further advice on this are: BAALPE (British Association of Advisers & Lecturers in Physical Education) http://www.baalpe.org/, and the British Mountaineering Council, http://www.thebmc.co.uk/. They should be able to advise you on the minimum requirements with regard to safety. Have you had a copy of the activity provider's written risk assessment and how they will manage the foreseeable hazard of unsupervised access? Hope you find this useful Dave

Posted By Andy Petrie This raises an interesting point, if you are taking responsibility for people climbing on an exterior wall are you also going to take similar responsibility for people climbing on any trees that you may have. We'd have to fence of every tree and post no unsupervised climbing signs. I would however suggest a small fence as opposed to a rope.
