Posted By NAMIR During a recent chat with a colleague who is Podiatrist she has indicated an increase in the number of patients complaining of ingrowing toe nails. This increase is attributed to the wearing of safety shoes/boots. Is there a link?? Namir Rahim

Posted By John Murgatroyd There is nothing to link ingrowing toe nails to safety footwear, no more so than other footwear. There are various causes for this condition, of which badly fitting footwear of any type is but one cause. The footwear worn should be a good fit but not tight. The big toe should not touch the end of the footwear and in the case of safety footwear with a steel toecap, the nails should not touch the end of the shoe/boot. Also note that another cause is nails too long or untreated foot injuries, specifically any damage to the nails.

Posted By Miriam Namir: I came across an old booklet I have about footcare, it says: Ingrowing toenails is caused by cutting toenails incorrectly. A bit of nail pierces the skin at the side of the nail which then leads to the area becoming inflammed and painful. To prevent ingrowing toe nails, it recommends: 1. Cutting toenails straight across the top of the nail, rather than down the sides, and 2. Cutting toenails regularly so that they do not press against the end of your shoe causing bruising. I feel sure there is a professional association that represents Chiropodists in the UK who could give you further advice on this matter. Miriam
