Posted By RyanKershaw I’ve posted this thread to hopefully get some advice from the huge amount of H&S professionals that seem to use these forums. My problem is simple I live in the Northwest and am about to finish the Nottingham Trent University Diploma in Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Management. I also hold the Nebosh General Certificate and as well as these qualifications have experience in risk assessments, both designing specific packages and managing them as well as managing the day to day aspects of specific in house H&S systems and all that goes with that. I also have some experience of work place audits, both designing and implementing, and I have carried out a stress management audit for an engineering company. I know that I haven’t got a massive amount of experience but I do have some, I am reasonably well qualified, highly motivated and very eager to give the right position 110%. However despite my enthusiasm I am finding it extremely difficult to secure a position. I have spent time working on a C.V. and happily send it to every organisation and consultancy within 30 miles yet I still haven’t found a suitable position. Any advice or ideas that people have would be very welcome, I thank you for taking the time to help me in advance and look forward to people’s ideas. Thanks, Ryan Kershaw

Posted By Sean Fraser Ryan, Don't think you could be doing much more than you already do. Lack of experience is only something that can be solved by getting experience through suitable positions, hence the seemingly Catch-22 position. Just keep perservering and be prepared to consider anything and everything. If you haven't already done so, put the same details on the Careers forum but to be honest, I doubt there is anyone who reads that board who hasn't already seen your post here on this one, but just in case it has been overlooked . . . Find out who your nearest employment agencies are - you might hit paydirt and find one who specialises in H&S personnel who you can visit and discuss your career aspirations. Try the national specialists as well - a scroll through any search engine will reveal who they are, or even a troll through back-posts on the fourms here will reveal useful URLs to follow up. If you have a particular industry in mind, find out who the main players are and who is close to you, then visit their websites for any vacancies. Note that some may not take CVs direct - for example, Shell use a careers website called oilcareers.com as their preferred route for "screening" candidates. One way to find possible organisations is to look up trade associations and look at their memebership list - this could give you some ideas and some even provide email links direct to the member. If you do apply for jobs direct, follow up on rejections and ask why, with a view to improving your presentability. Hopefully they will be progressive enough to tell you if it was presentational (e.g. CV too wordy / too sparse etc.) or criterion based (e.g. not enough experience!). At least it gives you something to work on. And remember that current advice these days is to tailor the CV for each position applied for - relatively simple in these days of computers and word processing packages. Finally, if you aren't a member of IOSH - apply! The association with this august organisation goes a long way to supporting your application and will eventually guarantee your competence level to prosepctive employers. Stand by for an IOSH campaign to raise awareness in this particular area and improve on the recognition profile of members to all employers. Hope that helps and I wish you well in your endeavours.
