Posted By Laurie Yes there are recommendations, which I can't remeber off hand. Suggest you post your query on the Firenet. You'll get definitive answers from full time professionals (not that you don't on this forum, of course, but fire professionals are best for fire questions!) Laurie

Posted By Corrina Evans Hi, When you do your fire risk assessment consider the use of the workplace, any equipment it contains, dimensions and maximum number of people likely to be present at any one time.People need to be able to reach a place of safety in 2/3 mins.A normal 750mm wide door will allow the passage of up tp 40 people per minute and in order to allow passage of people in wheelchairs, escape routes should not be less than 800mm in width. Routes to emergancy exits must be kept clear at all times, routes must lead as directly as possible to place of safety.Doors on escape routes should open in the direction of travel where they lead from a high hazard area,if they may be used by 50 or more people or at the foot of a stairway. Hope some of this is useful. Corrina Evans

Posted By Terry Smyth In general, corridors as a means of escape, are designed with the volume of people likely to use them as a means of escape at any one time for evacuation purposes. Such corridors as a means of escape must be protected by a fire door compartment every 18 metres. The widths vary; The aggregate capacity of exits within corridors should be calculated on the basis that: Not less than 525mm for a small number of people Not less than 750mm (standard door width) for up to 100 people Not less than about 1M is necessary for up to 200 people an additional 75mm should be provided for every 15 people above 200 Not less than 900mm for wheelchair user; and Not less than 1.1M for bed bound patients.
