Posted By sharna pane To any manual handling trainers out there! I'm a fairly recently qualified manual handling trainer, part of a team of three. We are training co-workers at our establishment and others in the local area in similar work places. The location we work in has only recently introduced specific M.H.Training relervant to our work. Our training covers legal responsibilties, regs, spine, risk assessment, equipment ,hoisting. we try and meet the needs of those were training. we aretraining peps who work with disabled children between 5-18 years old. Many of whom have had no previous M.H.Training and who are based at workplaces with no previous experience of disabled children. So we are also providing infomation on policy, handling assessments and record keeping. We get a day(9-4pm,including 1 hr total breaks) to cover this but feel it is not long enough. We usually manage the theory but feel we need longer to do the practical side justice. My question is to M.H.Trainers- How long are your training courses? Do any of you get allowed a 1 1/2 - 2 days? We usually train in two's;groups of up to 10. Our immediate employer, plus the managers of the people we are training seem to expect training to be completed in 1 day only. ANY THOUGHTS!

Posted By STEVE Hi Sharna It is quite obvious that the one day allowed is not sufficent due to your concerns. I run m/handling awareness courses dependant on the clients needs if it takes two days to achieve then so be it. You as the trainer need to ensure that you are morally as well as legally covering all specific aspects in provision of training. From your post you give the impression that you do not have suffiecent time, therefore this tells me that in order to achieve your aims and objectives of the course you must either be rushing certain elements or missing certain information. Could come back and bite you. As the Trainer it is imperative that the training you are providing is getting through to your learners - evaluation, if you are rushing to meet deadlines are the learners being given enough chance to absorb the information. You mention that you are working in a group of two, cannot you split the class into two then one of you provide the theory and the other the practical.(morning/afternoon session) I know this would create additional resources but maybe they could be arranged. Put your concerns in writing to your employer(take a photostat for yourself) Courses are on offer from 4hrs to 3/4days for manual handling but again this will depend on clients requests and what the trainer has to provide. You mention that you are also providing asistance for disabled persons, would it not be a good idea for you are your collegues to go on a People Handling Course as well. Hope this helps a little, if you require to discuss more can e-mail you direct. Steve

Posted By sharna pane hi steve the course we are trained to deliver and the training we deliver is quite specific.perhaps I should have mentioned that. We specialise in M.H. Training in Special Needs in Education. It is very specfic and includes topics like inclusion. We were trained over 5 days, covering approx 20 units. we are delivering a scaled down version. You did help because I guess you reinforced what we already knew which is if we are not 'happy' with time allowed we are going to have to speak up before it comes back on us.Our problem is we undertook the trainers training with promises of full support not realising that our manager doesnt really understand all the implications.we want to do our job properly and not meet minimum requirements. The more I 'potter' around Health and Safety sites the more I realise how far we are behind, on many issues. I should add, our training was organised last year by our new manager after the previous retired and we are obviously playing catch up after years of falling behind.Issues across a wide range are being addressed.I will print off your response and have a get together with my handling buddies and formulate a plan. cheers for your interest sharna pane
