Posted By Eric Burt Has anyone heard of / or had experience of First Aid Instructors developing Work-related Upper Limb Disorders e.g. pains in the wrists / arms, caused by demonstrating chest compressions on a manikin? Thanks Eric

Posted By Deborah Armstrong Hi Eric Contact the HSE. They compile annual statistics for reported accidents/occupational diseases such as Repetitive Strain Injury etc. There are various categories in their reports, one such being accidents/occupational diseases reported per occupational field. Would advise you to carry out a risk assessment on the actual duties of the first aid instructors. I would say they would need to be doing a fair amount of compressions per hour over an eight hour period to experience the symptoms you noted-however there may be pre-existing medical conditions to take into account. Your assessment should also include ascertaining the hobbies of instructors outside of the workplace, ie tennis etc, some type of vigorous sport. Also look at the instructors' health - any known medical conditions, ie pre-existing back problems; rheumatism, etc? You have probably already carried out the latter, but hope you get the information you seek from the HSE. Kind regards, Debbie Armstrong
