Advice sought please:

Currently carrying out work on one of our sites which will involve cutting off and re-capping boiler flues above a mezzanine floor (for extra info; live workshop is below mezzanine floor)

Potential of a great deal of coal dust in this area. Walls of area also need to be cleaned down where coal dust may have built up. Work will be in an area classified as a 'confined space'

Anyone point me in the direction or provide advice on the issues of coal dust and other potential issues which may arise from this line of work (aside from those of confined spaces).

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dee

Having worked in the Coal Industry for many years I can tell you from experience that there are many issues relating to coal dust.

Respiratory disease by inhaling coal dust underground, such as silicosis and pneunomicosis (I may have spelt that wrong).

The coal dust gets into the lungs and makes breathing quite difficult. Might add though this tends to happen as a result of a lot of exposure over many years.

There is also an explosibility issue with coal dust if it accumalates around an ignition source.

I would contact the Mining Unions or Coal Authority for more information. National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).Iam sure they will have a website. The Health and Safety Laboratory should be able to help as well. You should be able to access them through the HSE website

Hope that helps you on your way.

Is it coal dust, or is it soot?

Coal soots are classified as category 1 carcinogens, some other soots as category 2.
