Wondered if anyone out there would be kind enough to consider my problem.
We have a mezzanine floor approximately ten metres high which supports our air cooled condensor fans. This level is enclosed on all sides, but open at the top. Access to and egress from this level is via two metal staircases, one of wich is totally enclosed.
I wish to install three exit signs, two at the top of each staircase and one at the bottom of the enclosed staircase. Which form should these signs take? ie. man running towards door with arrow pointing downwards, man inside doorway with or without arrow etc.

Marcus,
If you can get a copy of BS 5499-4:2000
"Safety signs, including fire safety signs" ISBN 0 580 33205 5 (BSi are on tel. no. 020 8996 9001) you will find clear answers to your problem. This guide gives loads of diagrams and information on the correct provision and siting of fire exit signage.
You should always have two clear stairways from your mezzanine and an extinguisher by each (min. 26A rating on all floors including Mezz. - 1 x 9lt water = 13A or 1 x 6lt AFFF-foam = 13A as a guide).
Regards
Chris Cooper
