Need some guidance with regard to Health & Safety courses.

I am completely new to Health & Safety and my only "training" is a 2 day Trades Union course. I have submitted an application to my employer requesting funding for the NEBOSH Gen Cert course. There should not be any objection to this. However, having looked through this forum I learn that there are a number of courses e.g. Managing Safely, Managing Risk, Working Safely. In addition to these there is the Diploma (PT1&2) and NVQ.

My queston is, bearing in mind that I do not want to bite off more than etc, what should I pursue? I would be happy to begin with Gen Cert and take it from there.

Thanks

I assume if you have done a 2 day intro through your union that you are a Safety Rep. (if not get yourself appointed as one). Then you have a right to go on the ten day TUC Stage 1 course then the 10/12 day Stage 2. You could then go on to the 36 day TUC Cert in OSH (although getting time off for this one is still a problem with employers who have a bad attitude to unions and to H&S.
Contact your local TUC for information.

For the new version of the Nebosh diploma the Certificate will apparently be more or less an entry requirement, so the Certificate seems like a good place to start.

Hi there,

I would start with the general cert as it provides a thourough introduction to the general aspects of H&S, from there you can progress to diploma/NVQ routes.

Cheers

I agree with Gilly
Get appointed as a safety rep and pursue the unions (TUC) H&S training which is of course free to members. After attaining the H&S reps stage two course, you will be entitled to apply for a place on the TUC Occupational Health and Safety Certificate course which IOSH has accredited with Tech SP status.
