Posted By Marc Hi, I have been asked by my company to gather some information on point systems for fork lift truck accidents. We are looking to implement a system where if an operator has an accident or is witnessed operating in an unsafe manner they will be awarded penalty points depending on the severity. After the points have been awarded there will be a numerical point at which action will be taken against them. Do any of you run a similar system?. If so could you please let me know what your numbering system is and a list of actions that you take. Your help would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Marc..

Posted By Clarke Kent Marc, I have not come across such a system before and would always consider other options first, as use of the big stick does not always resolve a deeper set issue. Why not try to be more pro-active and reward operators observed driving safely rather that punishing those reported for not. People are also wary about what they consider to be 'grassing' on their workmates, especially if they know that they will be disciplined for it. Any Business with a good understanding of Health and Safety Management will always aim to encourage safe behaviour and good working practices. If you are experiencing problems with your FLT operators consider refresher training, tool-box talks. Try to establish the reasons why they are not driving safely and take the appropriate corrective action. Disciplinary action against an individual for what may be an organisational failure will not solve your problem.Don't blame the monkey if you don't like the tune. Hope this helps

Posted By Merv Newman Marc, I don't know of a specific FLT negative points system, but it sounds like a lot of the traditional (ie STOP programme) safety "encouragement" programmes. Question : having lost 10 points, can I win them back by being an exemplary driver for a week or two ? Question : if there are points lost for bad driving, are there points to be won for good driving ? We all know how to criticise bad performers but we dont seem to know how to recognise and reinforce the good people.

Posted By John C My view is that the penalty points system should not take the place of disciplinary action. Consider what demerit values you place on negative driving actions very seriously. What is the action if something happens that had serious potential for injury, but no actual injury? Do you issue points only? What re-training or in house retesting is done and at what point? Who carries out the investigation and awards the points? Are the points to be issued over a rolling period of time? Are you to have spot checks on the drivers at regular periods? Although it can be a useful tool it is not the only answer to ensuring drivers are doing as they have been trained.

Posted By Robin Pelling A better system would be for annual assessments rather than a points system. This could lead to the culture of blame, it was not me...
