Posted By Liam Mc Conalogue Hi All, We have had a common re-occurring problem on construction sites i.e. scaffolding being altered by other trades. The problem is as we all know site managers cannot be everywhere simultaneously and once out of sight we find tradesmen are removing items for whatever reason. We have displyed notices prohibiting such alterations by tradesmen other than scaffolders and sending perpatrator's off-site but these haven't had much affect. Have any of you out there encountered the same problem and what did you do to resolve this problem? Regards, Liam

Posted By Peter MacDonald Liam You need to put out a site wide letter to all the managers of the various subcontractors stressing the problem. Devise a tool box talk that can be given outlining the problems associated with incomplete or altered scaffolding (emphasising the number of fatalities industry wide as a result of falls from height). Outline the disciplinary aspects of non compliance with the site rules. Get a pro-forma signed from all the companies that the information has been passed on to all the workforce. You might want to ban all scaffold items from any other use on site other than scaffolding and make it a non conformance to have in your possession, or use, scaffolding items. Once you're set up and confident that the message is out there and no one can say they have not been informed bladder the next person in non compliance. ban them from site for a week (or sack them) and go the full mile in a letter to their company. This usually does the trick. Peter
