A proposal has been made that we should pay to have people's eyesight tested if they are required to drive on work business. Thoughts please?

An employer is of course entitled to pay for anything he wants.

There is to the best of my knowledge no legal requirement in health and safety law that requires him to do so.

Regards.

Hi

I presume you stipulate that driving for work means they have to do it legally - MOT, tax, correct insurance etc. This also means abiding by the highway code (COP), isn't there reference in it to eyesite? Its the employees obligation to ensure they can see the required distance, so you could just ensure they can read a number plate from x yds and document the test??

This Authority has paid for eyesight tests for drivers for a number of years.

The only people we have made it available to are those who drive a Council HGV i.e. refuse collection vehicles.

As previously stated no legal requirement other than anything stated within the highway code.

There are several categories of driver that must have regular medicals which would include eyetests e.g. HGV, LGV, PCV, Taxi Drivers. The legislation relating to driving licenses for such vehicles cover this, over and above the general requirement in the highway code.
