Hi All
This is not an advert for a register but a thread to guage interest in setting up one.
My thoughts have been generated by my own experience in the past and the many requests for employment of persons wishing to get into Health and Safety.
I wonder how many would be interested in setting up a database of persons wishing to seek a step into the world of Safety through a work experience programme. I am sure there are many small companies who could use such a service.
This database would need to be secure to prevent abuse of data protection. Has anyone got any ideas on this?
If enough interest is generated then I am sure IOSH would take it on board. I am bascically looking for interest from people who have recently gained qualifications and also employers who might want to give someone a chance to use the knowledge gained.
I maybe opening myself up for a lot of flak, but as I know from the past if we don't try we won't succeed and surely we are in the business to help each other from time to time.
By the way I don't work for IOSH.
Kind Regards
Robert Paterson

Let's start the ball rolling - I am in favour of the concept.
My perspective is that of a specialist consultancy that has no plans to offer long term employment but would always be sympathetic to providing work experience at times when specific tasks are on the go (or when we're pushed for manpower!).
Flexibility is the key - so having a database of potential contacts would certainly be a big step forward.

Having only fleeting had contact with Health and Safety in higher risk sectors and having just gained corporate membership I think its a fantastic idea as it would be ideal for current safety practitioners or want to be practitioners to improve the spectrum of their practical knowledge.

Hi Robert
Just like to register my support for the above idea.
Having made a change to the health and safety field rather late in my career, I think a work experience register would be of great benefit to the likes of myself.

Robert,
I think this is a very good idea. I am in the catch 22 situation i.e. Safety Rep of 5 years with certificate and now studying for the diploma, but finding it difficult to get a foot in the door.
I would be very interested in work experience, job, family and studying permitting!!.

I think this may be the best approach Robert as the 'closed' Forum produced only a few responses. However, I can state that this issue is being debated in the Corporate Strategy Committee over the coming months and I am putting a brief Paper together to support the idea. So let me have even more positive views on this to see if there really is support - remember that there are two choices - open Forum where your details would be seen by everyone, or closed Forum where only Members registered would see your details. It's up to Members to give an opinion, as the technicalities will be different for each method as well as Data Protection aspects that will have to be examined. George
