Posted By David Thomas I have always had an arrangement with my local waste disposal company to dispose of the few fluorescent tubes we use by just inserting into the normal landfill waste. However, in reading the latest edition of Electrical Engineering I now see that from 16th July fluorescent tubes have been classified as hazardous waste under the European Landfill Directive. This now imposes a Duty of Care under legislation to dispose of them correctly. I knew there was trace elements of mercury in each tube, but why have I found out about this by "accident" and not been bombarded with legislative information ??? dave

Posted By Peter John Orridge The disposal of these used tubes is subject to a duty of care, and there have been a number of prosecutions. The tubes are special waste, and whoever transports them must be a registered waste carrier. Their transportation must be covered by a transit note. If the tubes are sent to a transit area this must have a transit license. If any of the above isn't in place everone involved can be prosecuted.
