Posted By Tony O'Keefe Tony, I myself had considered carrying out site surveys for the company I work for and enroled on the BOHS P405 course (Proficiency in Managing Asbestos in Buildings). This was a very good starting point, which prompted me not to carry out the surveys myself. The reason is that I would only be able to conduct type 1 (presumptive) surveys, which I belive would not have given me enough information to produce suitable and sufficient risk assessments or to produce a management policy. I don't know if you or other members of your organisation have the competence to conduct type 2 surveys which would/should provide you with all the information you need. though I seem to remember reading I believe it was in MDHS 100 that anyone undertaking sampling or surveying Should: Have appropriate training; Be able to demonstrate independence, impartiality and integrity; and Have an adequate quality assurance procedure. With the above in mind this work was contracted out, and now a programme of surveys is underway. Before commiting yourself to this a quick cost benefit analysis may prove it is cheaper to have this contracted out, I am normally the type to carry out as much as possible in house but as they say know your limitations. PS I HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH ANY SURVEYING COMPANY OR SIMILAR Regards Tony

Posted By Ron Hunter Agree entirely with Tony, and also add that anyone conducting Type2/ Type 3 surveys should hold BOH/P402 as a demonstration of competence? Actual survey format should follow MDHS 100 principles, identifying ACM type and location, quantity, condition, vulnerability etc. Numeric scoring algorithms are also shown in MDHS100

Posted By NIGEL REE I totally agree with the last two postings, the BOHS 402 should be the minimum qualification, and dont forget the P.I. insurance to cover the surveying. Nigel

Posted By Heather Aston Agree entirely with both the above. We had an external consultancy carry out our Type 2 surveys. However we then produced our own reports, risk assessments and action plans, incorporating the results from the consultants. In my opinion, provided you have a reasonable awarenes of the Regulations and your own buildings, this is a good compromise. It also makes it much easier to amend your risk assessments in the future and leads to proper ownership of the action plans. I found L127, the HSE ACoP & Guidance on management of asbestos in non-domestic premises very useful. MDHS 100, as already mentioned, does define the limitations of the different types of survey.
