Posted By Paul Barnacle I'm looking into how i can track the number of days lost due to injuries or illnesses sustained whilst at work. This data will be evaluated throughout the year to identify any patterns across the company. does anybody have a template of a form i could use or any suggestions on how i can implement such processes. Kind Regards Paul

Posted By Heather Aston Paul I have found the most difficult aspect of such a system to be determining which absence is due to "illnes and injury at work" and which is not. Once you have the data, more or less any database proramme will draw graphs and do calculations for you. We have tried to tackle the issue by requiring all perons returning to work after absence to have a return to work interview with their line manager. A specific question on the RTW form says "was this absence caused by your work" and a second question asks "was this absence related to a previous works accident". We've found this very helpful. Best of luck with it. Heather

Posted By Delwynne If you have a robust accident reporting system then the days lost due to accidents should be fairly easy to track. You do need to watch out for the recurring ones such as back problems which may result in people taking a few days off here and there over a long period of time. The more difficult one is the ill health side of things. Before you get accurate figures on this you may need to carry out some 'education' for your staff. Some people see claiming ill health from work as whinging and may not even realise that their ill health is work related. Others see every cold and cough as an opportunity to beat the company over the head with a big stick! If you can educate people as to why you want to get this information you may have a better chance of obtaining accurate figures. If you have an HR/personnel department get them on board for this one, same for payroll as they are the departments likely to have the information you need. Good luck.
