Morning all
My task is to create and deliver (at no cost) a refresher safety training package which will cover the basic things like fire and also specific items relevant to each work group (lessons from recent accidents, machinery, chemicals, etc). It needs to be very visual as some employees are deaf and others are not fluent in English. I have no experience of this sort of thing. Can anyone direct me to some good (free) source material that can easily be adapted?
Also, can anyone recommend a suitable short, sweet course to dispel misconceptions for a director responsible for safety but with no prior knowledge, interest or appreciation, in south-west England?

Hi Kate, your local Social Services department may be able to provide you with a signer for the deaf trainees. Either that or your local RNID might be able to help. I have seen books with the hand signs "drawn" above the crucial words so if you are running the course several times this might be helpful. You may well have a local Council for Racial Equality who can help with languages other than English - ours has always been really supportive with things like this. Failing that there is the National Interpreting Service:
National Interpreting Service
One St Clements Court
London EC4N 7HB
Telephone: 020 7626 0220
Fax: 020 7283 3678
Website: NISUK.co.uk
Sorry but I don't have an up-to-date list of their charges.
Could your manager perhaps benefit from the IOSH "Managing Safely" course?
Good luck

I too would recommend IOSH Managing Safely.
Also the HSE site has a specific leaflet on dorector's responsibilities which may contain quite a few surprises for him.

Hi Kate
Have a look at web-safey.com's safety exchange. There are many powerpoints and other source material provided freely for use/ adoption.

Good luck

Kate,
One quick idea that i have used previous, is to use the colours Green and Red for your presentation, so for instance you could display a picture with the correct to do something with a Green box behind it, and beside it display a picture with the incorrect way to do something with a Red box behind it. Red and Green ticks in the corner of the appropriate picture i find also help.

Hi Kate,
A site that you might find useful is the US Naval Safety Site. It has lots of info, loads of great pictures, (how not to do things), but more inportantly quite a few ready made full PowerPoint Health and Safety presentations. (Downloadable to your hard disk). No registration or password required.Their address is,
http://www.safetycenter.navy.mil/
It is a very large site and may take a bit of searching. Their most useful sections are Downloads and Presentations.
Hope this helps,
Pat Hannaway

Thanks to all for the responses. I'm not sure I'll be able to sell "Managing Safely" as it is quite lengthy (four days) and two of the misconceptions are:
1. I don't have to manage safety because Kate does it all.
2. It only applies to large firms.
