Posted By Declan O'Driscoll would anybody with experience of using stone crushers on a demolition site be able to highlight the safety elements to be incorporated within a method statement. The supplier/hire company does not have a manual -- I would appreciate any pointers from other safety consultants who may have experience of same--- The machine is a Extec Megabite
thanks

Do not let anyone use this equipment without the relevant training documentation and proof of competency. The crusher works in a team of four. Crusher operator, second man, machine man (excavator loading) and a banksman. Do not use anyone that has no experience.
I can't go into how to operate the crusher as it would be near impossible to just write that out. However, the following should be used as a basic guide to carrying out crushing on site.
1. Machines must only be operated by trained personnel. 2. A pressurised water supply must always be connected to the crushers dust suppressant unit prior to crushing commencing. 3. Always pay attention and concentrate on the job at hand. 4. Read and follow warnings and labels. 5. Read and understand the operators manual and all machine aspects. 6. Familiarise yourself with the surrounding work area. 7. ONLY operate this machine if guards and safety devices are in a position and operative/ 8. ALL personnel in the vicinity of the machine MUST wear suitable safety equipment, ie safety boots, ear protection, eye protection, protective clothing, hard hat, high visibility vest and suitable dust mask 9. Daily dust monitoring to be carried out by crusher operator.
NEVER
1. Run machine without guards in place. 2. Make adjustments or clean moving parts whilst machine is running. 3. Reach into the machine to clean, lubricate or adjust without first shutting off power to engine & removing ignition key. 4. Operate the machine while under the influence of drink or drugs. (NOTE:- medicines prescribed by your medical advisor may make you unfit to operate machinery. Always check before attempting to operate machinery). 5. Allow grease or oil to remain on platforms or the area surrounding the machine. 6. Wear clothing or jewellery that could become entangled in the moving parts of the machine. 7. Try to clear any blockage whilst any part of the machine is running. 8. Permit any flame, cigarette, spark or other hear source near fuel tank. 9. Fill fuel tank while machine is running. 10. Operate this machine on “sloping” ground. 11. Operate machine while it is lifted off ground by jacking legs. 12. Climb onto crusher or touch any moving part when the machine is running. 13. Attempt to lift crusher using lifting points on jawstock.
NOTE:- The above list is not exhaustive, if you are unsure whether anything is unsafe, stop the machine IMMEDIATELY and contact MDL Management.

Is the equipment suitable by design, construction or adaptation for the task in hand? Is it maintained in an efficient state, working order and in good repair? Do persons who are competent complete the maintenance? Could inadequate maintenance cause the equipment, guards or other protection devices to fail to danger? If a positive answer to above question, is there formal planned maintenance? Is there a maintenance logbook? Is it up to date?
Training Yes/No Have all personnel who use the equipment had adequate information and where appropriate written instructions on the correct and safe use? Is additional care taken over the training of young and inexperienced users? Dangerous Parts of Machinery Yes/No Have effective and suitable measures been taken to prevent contact with the dangerous parts of the machinery? A detailed risk assessment may be required to identify any particular hazards.
Temperature Yes/No Are there parts that require guarding to prevent injury from contact with extremes of temperature?
Controls and Control Systems Yes/No Are the start, stop and emergency controls located so those operators are not put at risk as a result of the position of the controls? Are the controls clearly visible and identifiable? So far as is reasonably practicable is the operator of any control able to ensure from that position that no person is put at risk as a result of the operation of that control? If the answer is "NO" are 'safe systems of work' in operation to prevent persons being put at risk?

Isolation from energy source. Yes/No Is there adequate means for isolating sources of energy (Electrical / mechanical etc)? Are these (Electrical / mechanical etc) clearly identifiable and readily accessible? Are appropriate measures in place to prevent reconnection to any energy source at times when persons can be put at risk?
Stability Yes/No Is the work equipment provided stable?
Lighting Yes/No Are the provided lighting levels satisfactory?
Maintenance Yes/No Can maintenance operations be completed without exposing users and maintenance persons to risks? If "NO" are 'safe systems of work' in place.
Markings Yes/No Are all necessary safety notices clearly visible?
Warnings Yes/No Are all warning notices and safety devices ambiguous?
