Posted By NIGEL REE Could any one clear this up for me, I think that asbestos removal work should be covered under CDM regs due to the demplition of the asbestos containing structure. Pipe boxing, soffit etc. Any thoughts on this would be most welcome

Posted By steviezenga Nigel If the Asbestos Removal Works do not meet the CDM applicability criteria on their own, and are not part of other CDM applicable works, then it depends entirely on your definition of "demolition and dismantling". The ACOP(HSG224)does not define the terms in any detail, "Demolition....includes dismantling for re-erction or re-use.Demolition does not include operations such as ......removing non-structural elements such as cladding....." regards You seem to be advocating that all asbestos removal works be CDM applicable which is not necessarily the case, depending to a great extent on the nature, complexity and size of the removal works involved. Some Clients are increasingly however, as part of their Asbestos Management Plans, carrying out all removal works as CDM applicable projects.

Posted By Oliver Whitefield Nigel Even if its not covered by CDM, Asbestos Removal works have to be notified to the HSE in advance and detailed method statements etc prepared stating how the works etc will be carried out. So this may address some of your concerns for non-CDM asbestos removal works. However, I would tend to agree that major asbestos removal should be termed as dismantling, however, the removal say AIB ceiling tiles etc may not be classed as dismantling/demolition. Hope this helps Oliver

Posted By NIGEL REE The HSE have to be notified for work on amphibole (blue, brown)asbestos not Serpentine (white), so not all works are notifiable.

Posted By Charles New My understanding is that notification is dependant upon the Action Level being exceeded not on the type of asbestos being worked on. So work on chrysotile asbestos may become 'notifiable'

Posted By Oliver Whitefield Work with white asbestos is generally notifiable unless the work is with an asbestos cement product. If it is cement, ask for evidence of a density test, as this is the only way to determine if it is AC or AIB.

Posted By NIGEL REE Sorry over simplified my posting number 4, it does depend on the density of the cement product. Nigel
