Posted By Sarah O'Brien Please can someone help settle a disagreement I have been asked if someone driving a cherry picker and alike needs to have an HGV licence I think not as they aren't good vehicles, but it is argued that they are Heavy/large vehicles. What do you think is there any guidance for what is a HGV or when you need this type of licence

Posted By Mark Evans HGV licence can cover class I and class II catergory road vehicles(these cover a range of tractor units and rigid vehicles). Vehicles such as cherry pickers, forklifts, MEWPs, counterbalance and reach trucks have their own training certification schemes to allow people to drive them. Also don't forget an employer must make a practical assessment of competence before allowing an certified individual to operate a vehicle on their premises.. If you require a bit more info mail me on 'markevans@rixonway.co.uk' Hope this helps

Posted By Robert Bradford Sarah, any user of MEWPs whether cherry picker type or scissor lift must have proof of training. the standard in the construction industry is CPCS or IPAF. regards Robert

Posted By Ken Taylor The question is one of licensing rather than training. Does anyone have the official text of what constitutes an HGV and when the appropriate licence is required by law?

Posted By Mark Evans In the context of what we are talking about a HGV is a vehicle designed for public road use (i.e. plated) in excess of 3.5kg for which an employer must posess an operator's licence. Certain specialist bits of kit such as mobile cranes etc may fall under this classification depending on the vehicle in question. Forklifts, chery pickers etc would not unless over 3.5kg in weight, taxed and plated for normal road traffic use, which is unusual.
