I am currently reviewing/re-writing the refuse and recycling risk assessments and procedures within the local authority. Is anybody willing to share any that they have already completed.

Any respondents are more than welcome to have copies of any that will be completed by me.

In particular I am looking at kerbside collections, Wheelie bin coleections, recycling boxes, bulk collections(fridges, sofas etc), trade waste, caged vehicles and all assosciated tasks (refueling, assisted collections, cleaning of vehicles etc)

Thanks in anticipation

Not my subject, but I see that next week's IOSH Public Services Specialist Group Annual Symposium at Portsmouth will have an afternoon on refuse - so you could meet the right people or get some useful information from that event - or, perhaps, elevating the thread on the front page of this site might give time for a response?

Steve

My parents were told that they should "lift" their wheelie bin over an 18" wall to put it out for the refuse collectors - as you can imagine I went ape!

When you are completing your risk assessments therefore, I would recommend that you consider people who are not in your employ and ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, their health, safety and welfare as well and that for retired persons, lifting wheelie bins is not really an option and there should be ergonomically sound alternatives. Otherwise you might just get a rabid bulldog like me going off on one.

I agree Hilary, why have a wheeled bin if you have to lift it!

For the record we have assisted collections for the less abled, and where access is poor we still collect in black bags (2 smaller bags are better than 1 heavy bag etc).

We also have different size bins and collection boxes available upon request. Its not perefect but we are trying.

Any body wish to share risk assessments? Contact either by forum or by direct e-mail by clicking on my name at the top.

Are other Local Authorities aware that the HSE are consulting on launching an audit of recycling and refuse collection activities (50% of LA to be audited!)

Any comments/sharing of info appreciated

Regards

Steve
