I have spoken to a CITB training Advisor in the last few days , who has told me that the British Standard on scafolding is to be replaced by a new European Standard. I wonder if anyone knows were I might get hold of a copy of the new standar. He did say there would be some significant changes. Cna anyone shed some light

Dear Steve

There are a number of standards to do with scaffolding. Maybe you are referring to the standard BS 5973 which was superseded by BS EN 12811-1 in 2003.

However, you can get access to the index of standards via the BSI website

http://www.bsi-global.com/index.xalter

If you follow the links to 'standards online' you can do a search using keywords and look at the synopses. You can register free of charge to get this service. Getting the standards themselves involves someone parting with money, however.

Steve,
BS EN 12811-1:2003, Temporary works equipment — Part 1: Scaffolds — Performance requirements and general design published in December 2003 supersedes BS 5973:1993 which has been withdrawn.
You can purchase it from BSI

There are a number of new regs.

EN 12810 parts 1 and 2

EN 12811 parts 1, 2 and 3

They replace BS 5973 and BS 1139 and concern the use of scaffolding and how and what calculations must be done to en sure its safe use.

You can get them from the same place you get BS standards.

Please note that in the UK BS should precede the EN in the codes givern above

British/European/International(ISO) Standards are not "regs"--we as safety professionals should not use confusing terms.
