Hello everyone,
Does anybody know of any specific safety requirements or manufacturing standards for mirrors. They will be approx. 1 metre x 2 metres in size and wall mounted in a martial arts training centre used by all ages from 4 yrs to adult.
Thanks in advance
James

Part P of building regs states "all glazing in a building, placed where accidental collision with it is likely, must be constructed and installed or protected to minimise the danger of collision and injury to people"
In practice this generally means all glass below a certain height, be it in doors, windows or partitions, should be kitemarked toughened or laminated glass, georgian wired or protected by a metal grille. Glass to BS 6264 Part 4 1994 is deemed to satisfy the regulations, which apply to any permanently affixed sheet of glass or plastic.
If your mirrors are free standing, or hung on the wall with picture hooks, then the regs do not apply, but you will still have to undertake a risk assessment which would probably lead you to the same conclusion.
Hope this helps
John

Not that it is particularly relevant to the question of mirrors but I would hate anyone to get the wrong end of the stick...
Most Georgian wired glass is NOT safety glass and must not be used where safety glazing is required. Indeed the wires create points of weakness and consequently it is weaker than unwired plate glass of the same thickness. The other more gorey reason is that if you do put your arm [or any other limb]through wired glass the wires prevent the broken glass from falling away, and hold the broken edges in place against your flesh. This means that you can often do more damage getting your arm back out of the window that going through it in the first place.
For completeness you can order special wired glass that meets the impact criteria for safety glass, but it is not the norm.
