Posted By Kev Stevenson I am currently looking at the introduction of an x-ray machine into our business (food manufacturer)to detect small bone particles. (we already use a variety of metal checkers for other foreign body issues) This is a completely new field to me, does any one have any experience that could give me some guidance as to the main issues to consider and/or any legislation that I should research to ensure compliance? I already have a couple of leads from the HSE but wondered if anyone has any "hands on " experience? regards Kev Stevenson

Posted By Paul Leadbetter Kev As I am sure you have found out already, the use of x-ray sets is covered by the Ionising Radiations Regs. You will need to appoint a Radiation Protection Advisor (who need not be an employee) and at least one Radiation Protection Supervisor (who must have day-to-day control of the equipment). If you work shifts, you will need an RPS on each shift. The RPA will be able to devise a set of local rules governing the use of the equipment and, inportantly, what to do if anything goes wrong. At least with x-ray machines, the radiation disappears when you turn the power off. Check out the ACoP although, if you have no direct experience of radiation protection, some of it may be difficult to understand. Paul

Posted By S.Alder Hi, i am an RPS at a company that uses electrically generated radiation (not X-rays). Further to the response above i suggest that you contact the National Radiation Protection Board (NRPB) based in Chilton (01235 861000).They will be able to give you full advice on what to do. You can appoint the NRPB as your RPA and they will help you with your risk assessments and the writing of your local rules. They are also able to provide training for the RPS's that you will require . Hope this helps ,Mail me if you want any more info.
