A bank of 6 mobile racks are situated in a basement area and are used for storing old files. Although the files are not used daily there are times when they do need to be retreived by the individual requiring the file.
I have concerns about the possibility of an accident occurring with someone moving the racks whilst another is between the racks.
Is there a need for a brake to be placed on the rack to prevent it being moved by another whilst someone is looking for files?

Hello Stuart,
I work for a Racking Company as a Racking and Warehouse Safety Inspector. In the first instance i suggest the following engineering (Hardware) control options, both passive and active:
Safety Stop Flaps can be fitted to all bays as standard, on one face of each mobile and the plinth (static
bay). The flaps automatically shut down the system should an obstacle be encountered in the aisle during
operation.
A gravity-based, selfdisengaging mechanism; Handle engagement is activated after turning the handle through
90 degrees. The Safewind handle is deactivated, when released, to ensure operator safety when the mobiles are free-wheeling.
A positively engaged wheel attachment for the Wheel Console.
Where natural lighting is inadequate, optional overhead cantilevered lighting systems can be fitted to each aisle
and activated over a specific aisle when opened. Overhead pantograph arms provide flexible electrical links to each mobile without obstructing access.
For additional operator safety, an electronic aisle lock Can be installed prevent activation of any other aisle select button until the lock-out is deactivated.
Optional safety buzzer alarms can be installed on all non-aisle lock systems to indicate to operators that the system has been activated and is about to move.
Secondly, traditional Human (Software) controls such as 'TITO' (Tag in, Tag Out), posted risk assessments/Safety control procedures signed AND UNDERSTOOD by authorised persons who use the equipment will compliment the Hardware control measures.
Your Racking System should identify your manufacturer who should be consulted regarding you most suitable options.
Best wishes and safe working.
