Posted By Martin Taylor We have recently had new ceramic floor tiles laid into part of the factory and have had reports of sparks from metal objects being dropped onto the tiles.
Does anybody have experience of this - why it may be, - what can be done to stop it?
look forwards to ideas

Posted By fats van den raad The friction between the tiles and the dropped object causes sparks. The same would be achieved by striking the tile floor a glancing blow from the side with any metal object. Ban all metal objects or only use non=sparking metal (phosfor bronze).

Posted By Martin Taylor thanks Fat - I suspect it is a friction thing but not sure why we didn't have the same experience before the tiles were fitted - previous was a solid concrete floor.
Unfortunately phosphor bronze is really and answer consider the variety of materials used in the area.
Does anybody know of any proprietary coatings that may help?

Posted By John Webster Are the sparks a problem? I can't see that you need to worry about them unless there are explosive vapours/gasses around - in which case your work area would be Zoned.
The sparks don't tend to happen with concrete. It's softer than ceramic tiles. Unless the fallen tool actually strikes a bit of exposed aggregate its more likely to chip out a bit of cement.
