Good starting point could be to lift some excellent information from BS 7121. I have sent you an extract form our policy - not perfect but may be useful.
I wonder who out there will be going down the CITB route and sending there staff on a four day course. I currently feel, given the nature of the work we do and relatively small crane size 2days for our managers is sufficient plus a slinger course of one day.
Be interesting to hear other views!
best of luck

Deciding on the scale of first aid provision, together with equipment and facilities depends on the hazards that members of the workforce and those affected by your activities encounter. (risk assessed)of course!!
The organisation section of your health & safety policy can show with the help of an organisation chart, the responsibilities of the varios persons with regards to health safety and welfare. don't get too hung up on fancy charts, keep it simple.

As the two responses so far have shown, there is confusion whether you mean appointed persons as per the LOLER Regs (as I suspect you may) or appointed persons as per the First Aid Regs.
Which is it? You may then get some more responses.

The appointed persons I am referring to are those that are appointed under Regulation 7 of the Management Regs (Health & safety assistance)
thanks

Dear all
Just to give more clarification to my original question.
Regulation 7 of the managment regs (health & safety assistance) states the following:
7. - (1) Every employer shall, subject to paragraphs (6) and (7), appoint one or more competent persons to assist him in undertaking the measures he needs to take to comply with the requirements and prohibitions imposed upon him by or under the relevant statutory provisions and by Part II of the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997.
(2) Where an employer appoints persons in accordance with paragraph (1), he shall make arrangements for ensuring adequate co-operation between them.
(3) The employer shall ensure that the number of persons appointed under paragraph (1), the time available for them to fulfil their functions and the means at their disposal are adequate having regard to the size of his undertaking, the risks to which his employees are exposed and the distribution of those risks throughout the undertaking.
I would like to show my employer examples of safety policies where appointed persons have been identified along with their functions within the safety policy documents.
can any of you give me examples?
Thanks in advance
Paul

My understanding is that in your health & safety policy you need to detail what responsibilities people have for health and safety i.e you as the health & safety manager and your responsibilities, the training manager and their responsiblities etc, department managers and so on.

Thanks Lisa
I understand the requirements of what should be included within a safety policy to identify the competent persons, including co-ordination, co-operation etc., and was hoping that other members could give me examples of their own policy documents.
I am not in a position to change my company’s own policy, which is sadly lacking in its effectiveness. Although I have pointed out the shortcomings of the policy documents to my managers they appear unwilling to take my comments on board. What I planned to do was to show my managers a comparison of our own policy with examples from other member’s policies.
Regards
Paul
