Posted By MarkSMark Hello all, I am thinking of putting together a change control type system so that any changes- procedural or technical- come through the safety department. The idea is that we can then give helpful advice before any work is carried out, and also keep an eye on things. I would appreciate your views on such a system, and any advicfe on what I should include if we go ahead with this, I am thinking of using a paper carbon-copy form type booklet to help with feedback. Thanks in advance Marky

Posted By Martin Cope Mark, This sound like a very good idea, but may I ask a few questions? Have you been able to identify all processes that may present a risk to an operator or a maintainer? (risk assessments)? Have you been able to verify that documentation (instructions) are suitable and sufficient? (Issue control)? Have you been able to verify that all training has been suitable and adequate for the task being undertaken? (training records)? This may help you in identifying the order of priority? With regard as to the method I personally would recommend a database or spreadsheet, this would allow you to monitor progress, outstanding actions, dates, outcome, effectiveness and cost. This list is not inclusive but you may see where it may take you. Whilst some may say that this system may be expensive to put onto place, I would counter this by saying are you sure you cannot afford it. How about a presentation to senior management Martin

Posted By Ciaran McAleenan Mark Safety advisors exist within organisations or are retained by organisations to advise not control. Why would you want to gather change control to your safety department? Change control is for the process managers to take the lead on, seeking professional assistance as necessary. You could introduce the Operational Analysis and Control model for managing your work processes and once your managers and workers become familiar with it then review and revision becomes a normal part of the work activity. Not something requiring sanction from a remote safety department. The idea should be to help to develop competent and independent management, not to create ‘safety advisor dependency’. Best wishes Ciaran
