Morning everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone has a Generic Risk Assessment for a Guillotine used for shearing sheet steel they would like to share with me. I would be very grateful.

Thanks, Mick.

Don't you mean specific? (what type of machine and how is it operated?)

Are you talking about the French "vertical drop" guillotine (which is so lacking in finesse) or the English "scissors" type which can give a much more controlled cut ?

Hi,

Thanks for the replies to this thread and apologies for seeming ignorant and not answering your questions quicker.

The guillotine is a four metre Edwards with a scissor type shearing action. I am not looking for someone to pass on a Risk Assessment that i could use, just one that i could check to see if i have missed anything.

I've got the obvious ones such as cutting body parts off with the blade, crushing hazards either directly under the plate clamps or actual workpiece, noise, manual handling, mechanical handling and the other moving parts to the rear of the guillotine, and i would appreciate any help anyone could offer.

Regards, mick.

Dunno if this will help or just confuse the issue.

You might be best to consult any harmonised directives for this type of equipment and check the machinery safety directive to see if there is anything you have missed. These are used as the basis for CE marking and can prove a good source of information for possible hazards (don't assume that if it has the CE Mark it is safe).

You can get a list of directives here: http://www.newapproach.org/Directives/Default.asp

Also don't forget there is a seperate annex to the PUWER regs that deals with power presses which this may fall under (although I am not fully familiar with this piece of equipment).

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the link it will be useful for other machinery also.

I have already checked the regulations and according to schedule 2 of PUWER, part iv does not apply to Guillotines.

once again thanks Tom.

Regards, Mick
