Posted By Dave Skipsey Hi All There are a number of waste disposal sites throughout the country that are, or plan to change thier designation to toxic waste sites. These sites would be able to take waste "fly ash" from medical waste incinirators that may contain radio active material. The information that I have at present indicates that particles could be distributed for up to a three mile radious dependont on wind conditions. We have several employees who currently use one of these sites (due to change designation) on a daily basis, the site in question is also has several towns and villages within a three mile radius. Does anyone have further information on this issue, as I have some concerns regarding not just employees but the general public living and working in the vicinity of these sites. Regards

Posted By Richard Fisher Dear Dave I would suggest contacting the site operator or your local Environment Agency office. When the site applied for it's permit under the Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations, it had to submit very detailed analysis of all risks to the environment and health. This will have been done on a breakdown by waste types, sources, receptors etc. for each possible scenario. When the permit was issued, it will specify the manner in which risk must be minimised to suitable levels. The permit will specify all this information. This would be suitable basis for any risk assessment for your staff. All permits and associated inspection reports etc. are maintained on public register by the EA office. Hope this helps. Regards Richard Fisher
