I would be most grateful if any member could give practical advice/guidance on excavators used as a crane. It is our intention to lift steel pipes with a weight of 0.5t. The excavator is capable of carrying out the lift. When does the need for check valves come into the equation? What other pit falls should I address?

Used to do this quite alot.22 tonnes!
Locating the centre of gravity of the pipes is essential if your slinging / lifting.
You don't mention the length of the pipes so you may consider attaching breast-lines and a couple of "helpers" to prevent sway and assist guide.Tell the plant op exactly what you want, who is in total control and ensure all hand signals are interpreted correctly.
Obviously there are other common-sense-must- do thingys.

Hope this helps

If you use this item as a crane, it will require inspection by a competent person under the provision of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations. These examinations are normally completed by Engineering Insurance Companies.
You will need the certificate before the excavator is used as a crane.

excavators used as cranes with arated capacity of more than 1 tonne or an overturning moment greater than 40,000NM must have the following:-
lowering control devices to conform to iso 8643 on raising boom cylinders,
rated object handling capacity in cab on machine,
acoustic or visual warning device,
crane safety hooh or lifting shackle with S.W.L. marked & test certificate form 2531 or similar,
6 monthly examination of lifting gear,
test of thorough examination form 2531,
12 monthly thorough examination form 2530 or similar,
weekly inspection of excavator.

excavators used as a crane with a rated capacity of 1 tonne or less or an overturning moment of 40,000 NM or less as above except there is no need for the acoustic or visual warning device.

hope this is of some use to you.

Do not do , too much hassle and may revoke any insurances held. Does manufacturer provide info on use as crane, no. Then use a crane. A lorry loader crane will do the job safer, do not forget PUWER, suitable for use, stability, etc.

Robin, can you come and give us a hand, and bring your lorry mounted crane with you. I don't think it would get far on the pipeling we are constructing through the rain forest in Gabon west Africa. Also I don't think the PUWER Regs. are in use here, but I may be wrong.

Robert,

I now know why you need to use excavators as cranes and appreciate the environment you are working in. Carry out a test lift first under controlled conditions. Excavators can be fitted with lifting points by way of the manufacturers recommendations. When it rains, it rains.

I gather that the forms 2530 and 2531 were those for use with the old Regs for Reports of Tests and Thorough Examinations [1993?]and the required particulars which are now appropriate are to be found in Schedule 1 to the LOLER Regs.
