Would you work as a health and safety manager/adviser/consultant again?
Whatever your answer, one brief reason for your opinion.
Mine is 'No'
Reason, lack of job satisfaction, in the safety positions I have held.

Probably no.
Reason: After having done this for 15 years or so now I hanker after a job where there is a physical 'thing' at the end of the day which I can point to and say "I did that". Maybe something actually made, maybe some other less item-based achievement. While this is true to some extent with HSE its too reliant on the actions and behaviours of a large number of other people as well as myself to truly be able to do that.
Probably just a case of grass being greener.

I can see where you are coming from, Adam. After 8yrs in H&S, another 25yrs of this....No thanks
Provided Mr Brown doesn't force us all to work longer!

Quite definitely yes....
Done my 'apprenticeship' with blue chip company now on my own and putting back what I've learnt.
I am able to cover the whole spectrum of HS&E so my work is extremely varied, new challenges and very rewarding indeed. OK there are the times when it doesn't go to plan but then you just have to try another approach and refresh.
To be perfectly honest - I would recommend to any H&S person to get yourself fully trained and competent and to then go it alone - loads of work and very rewarding indeed.
Life just don't get much better than this....
Regards

Yes, I would do it again ...
1] The job is interesting and constantly changing to take account of the Law. There is no opportunity to get bored.
2] Some of the agencies come out with such incredibly stupid rules that can completely gobsmack you ie red fire extinguishers! This gives us a bit of humour
3] Most H&S people are really nice and I have found through this forum that they are happy to help each other and share information which gives a warm and cuddly feeling. (Ahhhh)
OK, there are some bad points - the money's not great considering the training you have to do to be considered "competent" but on the whole it's a rewarding vocation and I get paid for actually enjoying my job.

Nice thread Keith,
I would say, YES.
Many reasons, and most mentioned already, mine would be that after floundering for a positive career direction for some years, H&S (although I found myself in it by accident) has given me a "proper" career in a professional environment with a clear progression route and some interesting, varied and useful qualifications in which to back up my experience.
The sky's the limit!

Yes…I love the technical aspects of H&S, sometimes it can be difficult, but that’s mainly because of the politics of work rather than anything to do with H&S itself.

yes but...
Only if I couldn't get the position I wanted with Abbie Titmus. Now that's what I call job satisfaction!
Seriously - Yes, with bells on. Despite occasional frustration and set-backs, I don't know of any other career with such diverse intellectual challenge and variety.
(The position as Abbie's accountant is what I meant of course!!)

Definitely yes, because:
I enjoy being on the moral high ground (shallow but true);
Colleagues in the profession are usually really funny, intelligent and helpful - far more so than in other jobs I've had;
For every idiot who winds you up there is someone else who listens and learns;
And last but not least, you have the quiet satisfaction of knowing that you have at least tried to make the world better place for other people.

Definitely yes! I agree with Zoe,
Been there, made the finished item, been able to stand there and admire the finished product after 13 years on the tools.
I can still do this however; the only difference now is that it’s policies, procedures and the benefit of knowing that everyone leaves work in the same condition as when they arrived.
And now, being one of the shiny a**e brigade I, like all of you, can now participate in some of the informative, professional and enlightening (ahem!) threads on this forum.

I would do it all again, definately.
I like giving answers that are correct - maybe not appreciated, but correct.
At least the law (warped and over complicated as it sometimes may be) gives answers to those of us who are asked to provide them.
I'm in Insurance, so this is the interesting end of my field of work, but as a science graduate, having answers to my fingertips is far better than being sat on my bum looking for answers which may never arrive (like my train most nights!)

Oh Yes! - having spent the best part of my earlier working life in Catering/food safety - I have to agree with other responders, this IS the life!. I am constantly amazed at the support and generosity of spirit from colleagues, each supporting the other.
Theres never a dull moment, and despite the incredible lengths that people appear to go to, to avoid working safely I am confident that in my own small way I have helped someone live that little bit longer. Very gratifying.

Yes (excepting first thing Monday mornings, where the initial instinct is to sell up, buy a Harley, ride out and take a good look around - a fantasy quickly dispelled by the break out of hostilities when the kids rise and shine!)I wish I'd started years ago.
Reason - you get to meet such interesting people, evidenced by the inhabitants of this Forum!

Yes
I am still a young man in the field so I'm told at 25 and having worked in a Supermarket for a few years I was ready to give up.
I am now in a role where I am listened to and even better acutally consulted it's great and I love my job to bits. I'm not totally sad, I still swear when the alarm goes off, and still think the grass is greener but I could be in a lot worse an employment role.
I could be in Retail as a Manager, believe me they do have it bad.

Hell yes!!!!! Been down the "working with your hand" bit. Made the decision to change career path, even though I got into it by accident. Been down the "doing my own thing" bit as well. Back in employment now and enjoying it.
Will I do it again???? In a flash.......that is if I definately cannot come back as one of my missus's cats!!

Most definately do it again. remember in this job its what doesnt happen which is your pointer to success, so when you do leave to o home at the end of he day as long as your work colleagues go home with yoy then it has been a success and YOU contributed. Maybe you need and employer who values that contribution!!!!!!

Yes, yes, yes, for the same reasons as Merv.
Where else would you get to answer questions on colostomy bags, spilled mercury and chicken giblets in three successive phone calls!
Just wish I'd started twenty years earlier, but nobody'd heard of health and safety then, and PPE was a pair of dungarees and some barrier cream!
