I work for a number of contractors who are constantly harassed by Planning Supervisors for all manner of information for inclusion in the H&S File at the end of each project.
My opinion on the contents is that it should be health & safety related items only which make it into this document. I can see the value in knowing materials used, finishes schedules etc. as this makes for replacement, when required, alot easier but the time and effort expected to compile these documents is to be seen to be believed. One contractor has a section of 12 people to constantly gather the information for H&S Files!
Has anybody got any views on this and/or knows of any sources of information where it clarifys the contents of the File?

Personally, I think expanding the file beyond health and safety is good. We want health and safety to be integrated into business rather than bolted-on so if they want to use the file for a wider purpose I'd encourage it. Its more of an organisational issue to make sure the h&s person doesn't cop all the extra collation work and that the non-safety info is done by others.

You need look no further than the CDM ACoP. Read Paragraphs 254-267 and then check out Appendix 4.
You are right of course. The H&S file is for relevant H&S items (i.e. something that would be useful for future maintenance, modification or demolition or the structure).
Many people seem to confuse it with a maintenance manual. It could be a sub-section of it if you want.
