Posted By Steve Hickey Is there anyone out there that has developed an audit checklist for setting up a health and safety management system, within a Construction Company? I have an audit check list for what I would call an industrial, type business but wondered if anyone had one that is specific, to a Construction Company. I’ve never been let down yet by this forum but this one is a tough one grateful as ever Steve

Posted By Ciaran McAleenan Hi Steve Auditing a company's safety management system is broadly similar, regardless of the industry. What will differ is not their management responsibilities and procedures, rather their safe working methods/ operational safety controls. The SMS audit will initially establish that they have identified the need for the operational safety controls then the opportunity is there to audit compliance with the safety controls. If you do not have the background you would probably want someone with a construction background to consider the efficacy of the safety controls and their completeness with regard to the particular type of construction work being carried out. Details of construction safety requirements are available in the Construction HSW Regs (1996) [I am assuming you are interested in UK legislation]. Finally for now you can download a SMS audit question set at; http://www.web-safety.com/pdffiles/freeaudit.PDF I hope this helps. Regards and best wishes Ciaran
