Posted By Neil Tonge John,
The standard you want is BSEN 280:2001. Mobile elevating work platforms - design calculations - stability criteria - construction safety - examinations and test.
Everything you ever wanted to know about mobile elevating work platforms for the bargain price of £134 - £1.60 a page!

Posted By Alistair Reid Try to get a copy of PM28, no longer available from HSE books as the HSE guidance for these items. Newer guidance currently in draft form is available as a PDF document from the www.ipaf.org. which quotes EN280:2001 s the relevant standard for structural strength and stability requirements.

Posted By Hilary Charlton Oops we still call it a man cage - man as in a species rather than a person of the male gender.

Since when has a man been capable of operating a MEWP correctly!, ???
Our best operator of a MEWP is female, shes fantastic at it and can get places with her MEWp that no man can in our company. More power to her thats what i say.

Posted By Peter Batty Hi, just a one point, if you fit this type of device to a forklift truck then the forklift itself becomes a device for lifting people. LOLER standard frequencies for inspection are twelve months for equipment not lifting persons and six months for devices involved in lifting persons. Therefore if you fit a person carrying device to a forklift truck it's inspection frequency should be six months. It may be worth discussing this issue with whoever you use to provide you with the LOLER certificate for your trucks.
Peter.

Posted By Al Beevers John, PM 28 is definitely the best starting point for the standards associated with fork lift cages. If you use them, or intend to, I would ensure they are your only option.
As they are a modification of a forklift, a purpose built MEWP or other lifting platform would nearly always be the safer option. We are trying to phase out their use on our site in favour of MEWPs.
You should also be very careful about the jobs they are used for and that the drivers are trained and understand the differences between lifting people and goods. A clear communication system between the driver and person in the cage is essential.
